Head Instructor: Shihan Dana Abbott

Black Belt Hall of Fame 7th degree Shihan Dana Abbott wants to offer you the opportunity of experiencing "The Ultimate Physical Game of Chess" through the knowledge of the Samurai sword. You will participate in either private or semi-private exciting and informative classes. You will be doing something out of your "daily routine" while focusing your mind and body to work as one. Below is a sample of what will be taught during your class. You begin your class with Japanese formalities that have been practiced for eons. These formalities will be practiced both in standing and kneeling positions. During this time you will also learn interesting points of culture and the way of the sword from myself who lived in Japan for 15 years.
Next you will do some basic warm-ups with sword in hand using centuries old patterns. After you have gone through this section you will then practice age old techniques taught through pre-arranged forms called kata. The kata series you will first practice will be the Japanese Military Toyama style, the Seitei and kumitachi series developed by the Japanese Department of Education.

Over time you will being to duplicate the many katas which we will break down into individual teachniques and then dwell on those until your rote memory has been set in. These techniques will be practiced using steel, wood, bamboo and synthetics, then polished until they can be executed at full speed. After you have fought, sparred and trained at full speed and power you will be more focused.
During the latter part of your class you will apply your newly found techniques in a simple but effective manner. You will be surprised to experience your new awareness and the ability to defend yourself both mentally and physically.

One of the favorites of this class is test cutting. Test cutting involves actual hands on cutting of various objects using the angles and techniques you have learned. At the end of class you will be moving toward the experience of a samurai warrior in the 21st century.
